William Ziel must go back to his farm that he was given by his father to begin a new life. William and Sarah arrive at Hemelop-Aarde shortly after Lazarus, the farmer hand, who cared for Frederick, William’s lonely father, returns. The unlikely meeting of Mary and Lazarus turns into an alliance between like-minded spirits. Lazarus, an old soul struggling to find peace at this sad place, has a terrible secret. It is the demon-child, which he always carries around with him. This unfathomable character prevails over William and Mary, despite Sarah’s doubts. Although Sarah seems uninformed at first, her concern is based on the reactions of local residents to him returning from his wanderings far away. This could indicate that Sarah may have been right, and Ziels’ domesticity might be in danger. The kraal is first populated by the dead old lady, and then there’s the murder in the dark wood. This causes the circle of the Ziels to become closer. Will they be able to survive?
